Blue the Horse: How the Indianapolis Colts’ Mascot Is Kicking the Stigma One Kind Act at a Time

2023 Mascot Hall of Fame Greatest Community Impact Award Winner

Blue, the spirited blue horse mascot of the Indianapolis Colts, has been a fixture at Lucas Oil Stadium since his debut in 2006. Representing the energy and heart of one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, Blue quickly grew from a sideline entertainer into a full-fledged community ambassador. With a personality as big as the state of Indiana and an even bigger heart, Blue earned the 2023 Mascot Hall of Fame Greatest Community Impact Award — and the story behind it is genuinely moving.

21 Days of Kindness: Bigger Than the Game

In partnership with Colts Vice Chairman and Owner Kalen Jackson (Irsay) and the team’s mental health initiative Kicking the Stigma, Blue launched the 21 Days of Kindness program, a campaign rooted in a simple but powerful idea: show people every single day, for 21 consecutive days, that they are stronger than their darkest moments.

Blue’s acts of kindness ran the full spectrum. On the bigger end, he surprised a patient at Riley Children’s Hospital with Monster Truck tickets — the kind of moment that can reframe an entire week for a family going through something unimaginable. On the more personal end, he handed out free hugs in downtown Indianapolis. Both matter. Both land.

Why Mental Health Advocacy Needs a Blue Horse

Mental health awareness in professional sports is still finding its footing, and the Colts have leaned into it with real commitment. The Kicking the Stigma initiative has directed millions of dollars toward mental health organizations across Indiana. Blue’s role as the warm, visible face of that effort gives the campaign an approachability that a press release or a PSA simply can’t replicate.

Blue was named through a fan vote. Colts fans apparently take naming rights as seriously as they take fourth-down decisions, and they made the right call.
