2022 Mascot Hall of Fame Best Independent Program Award Winner
Olly the Otter is the official mascot of Kid’s Day of Lexington, a non-profit organization based in Lexington, Kentucky, dedicated to educating families on issues surrounding health, safety, and environmental awareness, delivered, as their mission puts it, with lots of love and laughter. Olly earned the 2022 Mascot Hall of Fame Best Independent Program Award for Meaningful Play, a program that takes the concept of a mascot’s community role and pushes it into genuinely profound territory. This is not about halftime entertainment. This is about children fighting for their lives — and a small otter who shows up for them anyway.

Olly’s Warriors and the Power of Meaningful Play
Meaningful Play is a two-year-old program, at the time of Olly’s 2022 award, built on a simple but deeply researched premise: play heals. For children battling cancer or other serious, long-term illnesses, the physical and emotional toll of treatment can strip away the most basic joys of childhood. Meaningful Play is designed to give some of that back.
Olly visits children directly at their homes, delivering either short Ollygrams, quick, joyful check-ins, or longer Heal-Through-Play dates that give kids an extended opportunity to laugh, move, and simply be kids for a while. At the time of his award, the program was serving 45 families, and parents’ feedback was remarkably consistent: “We haven’t seen our child this active in a long time.”
Showing Up for the Hardest Moments
What distinguishes Olly’s program from broader community outreach efforts is the specificity of its focus and the intimacy of its delivery. Olly doesn’t wait for families to come to an event — he goes to them, in their homes, at their most vulnerable. He celebrates milestones. He attends bell ringing ceremonies — the deeply emotional moment when a child completes their cancer treatment and rings a bell to mark the end of that chapter. He provides motivation to keep going when it’s the hardest thing imaginable.
The children in the program are called Olly’s Warriors, a name that acknowledges both the difficulty they face and the strength they carry in facing it.
Love, Laughter, and the Will to Heal
Kid’s Day of Lexington and Olly the Otter operate independently, without the promotional machinery of a professional sports franchise or a major corporation behind them. What they have instead is a clear mission, a genuine commitment to the families they serve, and a small otter who shows up with everything he has every single time.
Otters are widely regarded as one of the most playful animals in the natural world, frequently observed sliding, wrestling, and floating on their backs, holding hands to keep from drifting apart. It is difficult to imagine a more fitting animal to send into a child’s home with a mission to heal through play.
