The GEICO Gecko: How a Cockney Lizard Became One of the Most Recognizable Brand Mascots in American Advertising

2022 Mascot Hall of Fame Corporate Best Use of Brand Award Winner

The GEICO Gecko is the official mascot of GEICO — Government Employees Insurance Company — one of the largest auto insurance providers in the United States and a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. GEICO serves more than 28 million policyholders across the country and has built one of the most instantly recognizable brand identities in American advertising, due in no small part to a small green gecko with a British accent who has been telling Americans they could save money on car insurance since 1999. The Gecko earned the 2022 Mascot Hall of Fame Corporate Best Use of Brand Award for a mascot program that has become a textbook case study in long-term brand character development.

From a Writers’ Strike Placeholder to a Cultural Icon

The GEICO Gecko was born out of necessity. During the 1999 SAG-AFTRA advertising strike, GEICO’s agency needed a quick solution for a campaign, and a gecko was proposed partly because the word “gecko” sounds like “GEICO,” which is either brilliant or an extraordinary coincidence depending on who you ask. The character was originally voiced with a different accent before settling on the now-iconic British accent — specifically, a working-class London accent — which gave the character a warmth and approachability that resonated immediately with American audiences.

A Quarter Century of Consistent Storytelling

What makes the GEICO Gecko’s brand run genuinely remarkable is its longevity and consistency. For over 25 years, the character has anchored GEICO’s advertising across television, digital, social media, and beyond — evolving visually and narratively while maintaining the same core personality: helpful, cheerful, slightly exasperated, and deeply committed to letting you know that GEICO could save you 15% or more on car insurance. That message has been delivered so consistently and so effectively that it has become one of the most embedded advertising slogans in American culture.

The GEICO Gecko has been voiced by several actors over the years, most notably Jake Wood, a British actor perhaps best known in the UK for playing Max Branning on the long-running soap opera EastEnders. It is safe to say his American fan base knows him primarily as a small green lizard who is very enthusiastic about saving you money.
