The Mascot Minute: This Week in Mascot News
Grab your foam finger and settle in — here’s what happened in Mascot Land this week.
Youppi! Is in the Running for Best NHL Mascot (And Has Receipts)
USA TODAY Sports dropped its list of 20 nominees for Best NHL Mascot in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, and Montreal Canadiens legend Youppi! made the cut. Fans can vote through September 14th, with the top 10 announced September 23rd. This isn’t Youppi’s first rodeo — he’s already a proud member of the Mascot Hall of Fame, having become the first mascot from a Canadian team inducted back in December 2019. He’s also the only mascot in North American sports history to jump leagues entirely, switching from the Montreal Expos (MLB) to the Canadiens (NHL) in 2005. Somewhere, Gritty is sweating. Elon’s Phoenix Gets a Glow-Up
Elon Athletics rolled out a redesigned Phoenix mascot on August 17th, giving the character a sharper, more athletic look while keeping the gold sweater and monogram “E” that pay tribute to Elon’s original mascot, the Fightin’ Christian. Flame accents on the shoes nod to the university’s 1923 fire and the “rising from the ashes” theme baked into the Phoenix identity since 2000. The physical costume debuts August 25th at the semester’s first College Coffee — because nothing says “welcome back to campus” like a freshly redesigned mythological bird. (Source: Elon Athletics)
Sonic the Hedgehog Turns 35 and Is Still Faster Than Your Wi-Fi
SEGA’s Blue Blur is celebrating 35 years since his 1991 debut, and the mascot who taught a generation of gamers that patience is for suckers is getting a full year of anniversary treatment — new games, pinball machines, LEGO sets, and a Legacy Cartridge re-release. Not bad for a hedgehog whose entire personality is “walking is beneath me.”
Burgas Debates: Capybara or Seagull for Eurovision 2027?
As Bulgaria gears up to host Eurovision 2027 in the coastal city of Burgas, two mascot contenders have emerged: Kapi, an internet-famous capybara with zero actual connection to the city, and the Euro-gull, a seagull-inspired puppet character created by the Burgas State Puppet Theatre and rooted in local identity. Organizers haven’t picked a winner yet, but if the seagull loses, expect it to say so loudly — that’s kind of its whole thing. (Source: Novinite)
Bazooka’s Mascot Pushy Responds to the “Push Pop Army”
When a viral internet movement dubbed itself the “Push Pop Army,” Bazooka’s mascot Pushy didn’t stay quiet for long — issuing an official statement acknowledging the trend and telling new recruits to stay ready. A mascot with a finger on the pulse (and, presumably, a pocket full of candy). (Source: Roastbrief)
Brands Everywhere Have Caught Mascot Fever
A new piece from The Future Party makes the case that brand mascots build stronger customer loyalty than celebrity endorsements — mostly because a mascot never asks for a bigger contract, never has a PR scandal, and never leaves for a rival brand. Just ask Niles the Crocs crocodile, who’s been quietly winning hearts since last month’s debut. Turns out the secret to brand loyalty was a big foam head all along.
