Aubie began life as a cartoon drawn by Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel in 1959, appearing on Auburn football programs for 18 years before leaping to life at the 1979 SEC Basketball Tournament. He has since become arguably the most decorated college mascot in America, winning a record 11 national championships — far more than any other college mascot. Fans say women love him, children adore him, and men want to be him.
Fun Facts
- The original Aubie costume was made by Brooks-Van Horn Costumes of New York — the same firm that costumed Walt Disney productions — at a cost of $1,350, paid for by alumni donations.
- Aubie’s first game appearance was a good omen: he helped lead Auburn to an upset of Vanderbilt, then watched the Tigers defeat Georgia in a four-overtime SEC Tournament marathon the very next day.
- In addition to 11 national championships, Aubie was named the 2014 Capital One Mascot of the Year and makes more than 1,300 appearances annually.
