Aubie is the official mascot of Auburn University, a proud member of the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference (SEC), one of the most competitive athletic conferences in the country. Auburn plays its home football games at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama — a venue that seats nearly 88,000 fans and has humbled visiting teams for decades. Aubie the Tiger made his first appearance in 1979, inspired by a tiger character drawn by artist Phil Neel for a 1959 Sports Illustrated feature on Auburn football. He has been a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for the university ever since. Aubie is a seven-time Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Mascot National Champion, the most in history, and added two more honors to his trophy case with the 2022 Best In-Game Routine or Skit Award (Collegiate category) and the 2023 Best In-Game Routine or Skit Award (Collegiate category), plus the 2023 Best Video Short Award (Collegiate category), all from the Mascot Hall of Fame. That’s three Mascot Hall of Fame awards across two consecutive years for those keeping score at home.

Bringing the Skit to Game Day — Two Years Running
What makes Aubie’s in-game performances exceptional is the relentless creativity behind them. Every Auburn football game day brings a fresh concept — new costumes, new props, and new ideas that consistently draw attention away from an SEC football game, which is no small feat.
In 2022, with Auburn hosting San Jose State, home to Silicon Valley, Aubie decided to explore the Metaverse, donning VR gear and diving headfirst into virtual reality to entertain thousands of fans. In 2023, Aubie channeled his inner panda, delivering an impromptu Kung Fu masterclass to unsuspecting fans on the sideline. Both skits went over exactly as well as you’d expect from a mascot with 45 seasons of crowd-reading experience under his belt.
Rolling Toomer’s Corner
For his 2023 video short, Aubie leaned into one of Auburn’s most beloved traditions — rolling Toomer’s Corner. The famous oak trees at the corner of College Street and Magnolia Avenue are rolled with toilet paper after Auburn victories, and Aubie’s video showed him dutifully stockpiling an abundance of rolls in preparation for the season ahead. The video resonated deeply with Auburn’s more than 300,000 social media followers and captured exactly the kind of mischievous, authentic personality that has made Aubie one of college sports’ most enduring characters.
Toomer’s Corner has been rolled after Auburn victories for decades, but the tradition faced a genuine crisis in 2010 when a rival fan poisoned the original oak trees with herbicide. Auburn rallied, replanted, and the tradition carries on — with Aubie presumably maintaining a very well-stocked supply closet.
